In Richmond's northside, I had a hummer at the salvia last week. According to feedback from my articles, most of my readers are reporting the same date of Oct. 5th. There have been a few stragglers (Farmville,Victoria, Brunswick, Campbell Co.) reported on the 6th and 7th. Likewise, this may prove to be a good year for winter hummingbirds. Several have been reported in Southside Virginia. I think my Selasphorus has left, but the other - the "suspect Calliope" remains. Bruce Peterjohn saw the photos and is undecided as well. While he is leaning toward the bird being a very small, late molting Ruby-throat yet, it has other features that could possibly tilt the ID toward being a Calliope. He asked that if the bird were still around by end of next week, take another photo and contact him again. This hummer shows no signs of leaving. We will see. You might want to post this. I can not log onto our bird net. Thanks, Joe Lively On Oct 13, 2012, at 1:26 PM, Naseem Reza wrote: My last Hummingbird, a young male, was seen on October 5. It also came with some birds. I saw 3 chipping sparrows and 3 pine siskins this morning. This is the first time I have ever observed pine siskins in our yard. It took me some time to distinguish them from goldfinches (which did not show up this morning). Jim Blowers PS. Anyone seen hummingbirds lately? Especially in the Richmond to Midlothian area?
