Folks,
We have been hearing about a potential boardwalk project at Dutch Gap for many
years, since the old boardwalk was damaged in one of the big storms back in the
first decade of this century. If you have been to the park recently, you have
seen the beginning of construction on this project. Here are some details from
Mark Battista on that work.

Lewis,
The majority of the boardwalk is floating, though the beginning section is
fixed.
This phase of the project will create a boardwalk that reaches out about
halfway into Aikens Swamp. The boardwalk, which was made possible by a
matching grant from the Chesapeake Bay Gateway, will provide a unique wetland
experience for hikers and students, but it will also provide another access
point for kayaker/canoeist to reach the Tidal Lagoon.
A small parking lot has also been built to accommodate about 8 vehicles.
If we are awarded another grant, we would like to expand the boardwalk to the
north side thereby creating a 2.5-mile loop trail using the entrance road,
the River trail and the expanded boardwalk.
Mark

Hi Mark,
I had gotten a question from a Richmond Audubon member about the construction
at Dutch Gap. From the looks of it, it’s the long-anticipated boardwalk, but
I wondered if there were any details about projected completion date and so
forth. I wondered if it was going to be a fixed structure, or a floating
pathway like the one over at Point of Rocks.
Thanks for any info!
Lewis
