Underground Railroad at Belmead?
Mr. Carl Westmoreland came in September to research the site and interview
Powhatan residents.
Mr. Westrmoreland is a world famous research expert from the Cincinnatti
Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Pictured here with Lawrence Chavis
from St. Emma Military Academy, Mr. Westmoreland interviewed more than 30
local Powhatan people.
Sr. Donna Gould, SBS, began the project with a grant from Xavier
University of Louisiana. This visit was part 2 with onsite visit to the
hidden attic room in the Belmead Mansion and information about the batteaux
routes along the James in antebellum times.
