Birding ID questionWould anyone be able to hazard a guess as to the identify of the bird described here? ----- Original Message ----- From: Phaup, Davis To: audubon@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Wednesday, April 20, 2005 7:58 AM Subject: Birding ID question I hope this is the right place to send this question: Two evenings ago, Monday April 18, I had what I am almost 100% certain was an Indigo Bunting perched and eating from one of my hanging tube feeders (containing mixed seed). The bird fit every profile of an indigo bunting except that it had very visible white "patches" or bars on its wings. I'm pretty certain the bird was not a blue grosbeak and I have seen pictures of Lazuli x indigo buntings. This bird differed from the lazuli crossbreed in that it did not have any other white on it other than on the wings. I am quite confused after looking through my Sibley's, National Geographic, and other field guides, which do not indicate that indigos can have any white feathering. Do you have any knowledge of this? The bird was spotted at my home in Montpelier, in western Hanover County about 45 minutes before dusk. L.
