I would not recommend "compact" binoculars for an elderly Alzheimmer's (sp) patient.--- too narrow a field of vision ... and often a bit pricey given the likelihood of the items being dropped ...I would suggest something strong ("armored" or "rubber coated) with a wide field of view and probably on the low to medium end for price. 7x50's would be best, 7x40 or 7x35 wide angle would be OK and would be lighter. I'd look at stuff designed for hunters and / or students. Try some hunting magazines and/or a big sporting goods store for examples. The other way to go would be just to find the least expensive things around ... and buy two. Bushnell makes some inexpensive stuff, but there are a host of no-name products. Ralph White
