Today 5 people from the Savvy Seniors group at the First UU Church of Richmond hiked all the way around the Forest Hill Park trail from 10 am to 12 noon, including Anne and I. It was supposed to be a "wildflower" hike, and we did see bluettes, huge mushrooms, sweet gum blooms, English ivy and poison ivy (beware) and several other flowers. We also saw a toad, some snakes, and some turtles. We saw quite a few birds as well, and I took down this list: Cardinal h Catbird Grackle 4 Hummingbird Indigo bunting Mourning dove h Phoebe Red tailed hawk Red-bellied Woodpecker Red-eyed vireo Redwing Blackbird 3 Robin 2 Starling White-eyed vireo "h" means heard but not seen. All counts are 1 unless I specify otherwise. I did not personally see the hummingbird, so I don't know whether it was a ruby-throated or a rufous. I have not seen one at my house as of yet. The indigo bunting was a female, with a dash of blue on her head. I think that Lewis Barnett was conducting a hike at the same park at 6 am, and I wonder if he saw the same birds we did. Jim Blowers
