Nancy, Only this morning I noticed a bit more yellow--thought maybe it was just wishful thinking! My Carolina wrens sing all day, many different songs. They make my day! Hope your sings soon. I crumble some suet cake (John Coe's recipe) and sprinkle it on my deck rail and deck floor. This makes the wrens and snow birds happy while the squirrel is leaping up to the suet feeder from the rail---he grabs hold, works out a nice hunk, then drops down to savor it. Until I open the door and shoo him off! Nelda ----- Original Message ----- From: To: va-richmond-general@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: 1/31/2006 5:05:00 PM Subject: [va-richmond-general] Re: Feeder Birds. Wendy, I have been enjoying my PURPLE FINCHES up here in the north country of Beaverdam as well. I have had two males and one female visiting for about a week now. I moved my Christmas tree outside close to my feeders and I string fresh fruit and not so fresh bread on it every now and then. The birds seem to enjoy the extra cover if not the food. And YES I did string colored lights on it as well! It may seem a bit odd but the color helps me survive February. Maybe on a cold, windy February night the Finches can snuggle up to a warm glowing light bulb and dream of spring! Is it my imagination or are the GOLDFINCHES getting golder? "My" CAROLINA WREN is making good use of my suit feeder this week. Now if he would just sing me a spring song! Maybe the colored lights will get them to singing soon. Enjoying the view from the window. We don't often get Purple Finches this far south in the county. Wendy Ealding Chesterfield County
