Julie,
Even though I’m not on your outings, your your emails and photos are almost as
good!
Your comments and ‘illustrations’ give us a sense of the place, its critters,
the group, and the day’s highlights.
Thank you,
Elliott

Hello Birders,
Sharing with you another successful DGAP outing for our 4th round of the MAPS
season.
Hurricane Cindy never came near us and any prediction of rain was a fizzle.
We had low humidity and high enthusiasm as we opened the nets before sunrise
Sunday morning. A lively dawn chorus greeted us and many deer were seen in
the woods as nets were unfurled. We had many sightings of turtles,
butterflies, dragon flies, spiders and a green snake throughout the day.
A first for the station was the vocalizing and sighting of at least 2
Warbling Vireos. These are reliably heard along the river near the bluff as
we work on the Prothonotary survey but have never had them right next to the
banding station. Beautiful song.
There are many fledglings trying out their wings and we netted several with a
parent in tow.
Our trademark Dutch Gap show-stopper this week was a female Great-crested
Flycatcher sporting a brood patch. Incredible bird that "wheeeped" in the
hand.
Here's the tally of 30 birds netted and a few images of the day.
As always, thanks to the steadfast crew that is up and caffeinated and moving
trees and brush before the sun is shining.
