You may be wondering, "just what are those MAPS people doing this season"?
Well... we started season 9 on May 30th. Yesterday was session 3 of our 8
session season. Each session brings new excitement and new bug bites. One of
the best parts of Dutch Gap MAPS is how nicely it "dove-tails" with Dr.
Reilly's Prothonotary study. We net adult Prothonotary's and dispersing
fledglings. Nice to catch some of the one's we've missed out on the water
(which ain't many). Also fun to see the little pin-feathered fledglings morph
into big kids.
As is often the case many of the birds on our "wish list" remain in the
canopy. A couple have come down i.e. Blue-grey Gnatcatcher and Indigo Bunting.
Great-crested Flycatcher, Yellow-Billed Cuckoo and Acadian Flycatcher sounds
are all around. Yesterday was pretty slow and so was the team with the
humidity. June 5, session 2 was a veritable Woodpecker palooza with 2
Red-Bellied's netted as well as 3 Downy's and the almost Lord God Bird, a
Pileated Woodpecker. A first for us at Dutch Gap!
Besides the birds, we have had bounding deer, a clover-munching woodchuck,
hopping toads, black snakes and many determined turtles. Seems that we have
seen more turtle egg remnants near their nest sites than in past years.
One dedicated, steadfast team and the support of Chesterfield Parks and Rec.
especially Mark Battista is making this the start of a great season.
