In spite of cool temps, heavy overcast, and occasional light drizzle, a handful
of birders had a decent morning birding at Deep Run Park in western Henrico
County. While this park may be better known for its playgrounds and soccer
fields, there is a network of trails on the eastern side of the park that
skirts the swamp created by Deep Run, and there is some very good habitat in
that area. In spite of the weather, we had good numbers and good variety today,
especially where woodpeckers were concerned. The only expected woodpecker we
missed was Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. We had good looks at Red-headed
Woodpeckers as well as Pileated Woodpeckers. Other highlights were both
Kinglets (though Golden-crowned was heard only), Brown Creeper, a softly
singing Hermit Thrush, a pair of chattering Kingfishers, and a squirrel with a
shockingly blonde tail hauling an entire corncob back to its den.
We totaled 37 species. The complete checklist can be viewed on eBird:
