I found myself with some time to spare before the rains came this morning, and checked out Cheswick Park for the first time. The park is reached from the southbound lanes of Forest Avenue south of Skipwith in the West End. This is a small suburban park, but it has a nice creek running through it. Things were pretty quiet near the parking lot, but back along the creek, I found a very cooperative Louisiana Waterthrush. In the end, I had thirty species in about an hour. I heard or saw seven warbler species, including good looks at both subspecies of Palm Warbler. A singing Swainson’s Thrush was a real treat as well. While I wouldn’t exactly tout this as a birding destination, if you find yourself in the neighborhood with some time on your hands, it can provide a pleasant diversion.
