I trip to Henricus Park yesterday turned up at least 3 CASPIAN TERNS. I
happened to be there at low tide and the tern were resting on some exposed
land with about 100 Laughing Gulls off the floating dock down the ramp from
the bluffs (toward the Varina-Enon Bridge). They're kind of far out into
the water, so you'll probably need a scope.
The only only other birds of note were some summer residents that hadn't
migrated yet: About 8 Tree Swallows (flying around by the floating dock by
the first spur (Sycamore Spur?) along the Dutch Gap Trail, along with 3
Great Egrets) and a Summer Tanager (along the Bluffs). There was a report
from another birder I ran into of a pair of ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, hanging out
with a kettle of vultures (one over the swamp and one flying overhead
toward the lagoon). I never saw them, myself, though I did see a kettle of
mostly Black Vultures. I have no further information about them. I forgot
to ask him what morph they were.
