Even with rain it was another great day on the Eastern Shore. Saw people I
haven't seen for awhile and put more names and faces together at the CVWO
meeting (Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory). Great group of
hard-working people. The reports from the Songbird, Raptor and Butterfly
Teams were very informative and the student grant recipient from William and
Mary gave a very nice report on her ongoing work with bluebirds. There are
financial objectives still to be met for ongoing research if you have
charitable giving to do before the end of your tax year. If you cannot
locate their mailing address on the web I will be happy to help you out if
you email me directly.

Before the meeting I caught up with Allen Larner while he scouted for an
upcoming field trip. The most noteworthy bird was a female yellow-headed
blackbird found by Allen on the entrance road at Kiptopeke SP in a flock of
brown-headed cowbirds, red-winged blackbirds, and starlings-relocated later
by Paul Nasca. I probably should have looked a little bit longer at them
than I did on the way in! First sightings only by location are as follows:

Island1/CBBT: brown pelican, junco, yellow-rumped w., female e. towhee, Am.
robin flocks, Am. pipits, sanderling, gr. black-backed gull, laughing gull,
ring-billed gull, herring gull, tree swallow, sharp-shinned hawk, common
loon, ruddy turnstones, DC cormorant, n. gannet, song sparrow

Rt. 13/Scenic Overlook: BV, TV

Ramp Lane Pond: snowy egret

Kiptopeke SP: br. headed cowbird, RW blackbird, yellow-headed blackbird,
starling, common loons (OK, it's the 2nd sighting, but they were calling
back and forth when I opened the car door :-), surf scoter, white-winged
scoter, peregrine falcon, savannah sparrow (alas, the snow bunting has
apparently moved on)

Arlington Rd.: e. bluebird, e. meadowlark, chipping sparrow, Am. kestrel

Custis Tomb Rd.: gr. yellow legs, killdeer, Canada goose, Am. crow, bald
eagle, osprey, GB heron

Rt. 13: n. mockingbird, mourning dove,

Willis Wharf: Am. black duck, marbled godwit (life bird!), dunlin, willet,
hooded merganser, mallard, Forster's tern

Saxis Marsh (where the rain just came down harder and harder--still
beautiful): belted kingfisher, swamp sparrow

No time left for Chincoteague and other wonderful stops before the meeting
back at KSP. Can't wait to go back!
