Hi Martha, Could it have been a grackle? http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/common_grackle/id Under cloudy conditions it would have looked black-brownish, but in direct sunlight they are beautiful birds with a purple-iridescence to the body and wings. I saw a few this morning doing their best to bully some house finches away from my feeders!
