Hello Virginia Birders: I am a friend of Boston birder Dorian Anderson who is doing a Big Year on his bike while trying to raise funds to protect wild birds and their habitats. On January 29 Dorian visited Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge where he found Big Year bird No. 126 Mute Swan. Dorian calls his quest "Biking for Birds" and his partners include the ABA and The Conservation Fund. Dorian began his Big Year from Salisbury, MA and in 29 days, despite some winter storms, pedaled 874 miles to Woodward, VA. On Monday Jan. 30 Dorian should reach Fredericksburg mid-day, and then head south toward Richmond. While Dorian is in VA, he welcomes the chance to meet and bird with you, and if anyone lives between Richmond and Norfolk and would like to host Dorian overnight, he would love to hear from you. You can e-mail Dorian at "bikingforbirds@xxxxxxxxxx" Anyone who's interested can read about Dorian's adventures at "bikingforbirds.blogspot.com" or read further below. Thank you Virginia Birders. (Virginia) Biking for Birds: onward to the Orange State After arriving safely in Virginia, "Biking for Birds,” a year-long environmental odyssey aimed at protecting wild birds and their habitats, is headed for the Orange state. During this twelve-month endeavor, which commenced January 1 from Salisbury, Massachusetts, geneticist Dr. Dorian Anderson, a Philadelphia native, hopes to see and photograph 600 species of birds while pedaling his bike 15,000 miles across the country. To further eliminate a carbon footprint during his travels, Dorian will not have a support vehicle to assist him. 100 percent of all donations raised will go to The Conservation Fund (80%) and The American Birding Association (20%). And Best Western Hotels will provide Dorian with free lodging throughout much of his trip. Dorian reached New York City on Saturday January 18, and despite being thrown head over heels from his bike in New Jersey on January 21, Dorian arrived in his hometown Philadelphia January 21. Dorian now continues southward and expects to spend a month in Florida, searching for its fantastic resident birds. He is expected to reach Jacksonville, FL late February or early March. Dorian pedaled more than 455 miles through 4 New England states by January 17. In just 29 days, he’s already found 126 species of birds, photographing many along the way. His photography can be seen at “dorianandersonphotography.com”. Dorian expects to spend 3 months (March, April and May) in coastal communities from Florida to Texas before turning north into bird-rich Arizona. Dorian should reach the California coast by September, and come December, should conclude his Big Year in the mid-west. Those who wish to donate or follow Dorian’s epic adventure should visit "bikingforbirds.blogspot.com".
