Dear Richmond Birders:
Just about at dusk as we were sitting down for our Thanksgiving
dinner, I noticed a very large bird fly in and light on the Japanese
Maple tree in our backyard. I announced to family members that a
Red-bellied Hawk just landed on our maple tree. Nice bird but they are
around several times every year.
Lou looked at the dark profile and said that the head was too large
for a hawk so I got my bins to reiterate that it was a hawk and much
to my surprise, the bird turned out to be a Barred Owl.
Our 6 year old granddaughter immediately pronounced her grandmother
the top birder in the family and as a consolation prize I got off a
few shots of the owl. It is a good time to be a bird photographer.
Despite the marginal light, by bumping up the iso to 25,600 the
picture was still good enough to correctly ID ithe bird.
