At noon Monday the bittern was on the right as we drove along the straight
entrance road by the marsh. The bird was about 30 feet from the stop sign, on
the opposite side of the fence, feeding on the bank. We watched as he posed
and then stalked up the hill to disappear into the cattails. The Saunders
