Spring migration may be winding down, but it gave a pretty spectacular last hurrah at the 42nd St. section of James River Park today. I spent about four and a half hours there, most of it with Gerry Weinberger. We saw or heard 13 species of warbler, including a quick look at a KENTUCKY WARBLER, a couple of MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, and extended looks at a singing CANADA WARBLER (after you left, sorry Gerry!). The real fireworks, however, centered around the mulberry tree in the parking area. There were as many as six SCARLET TANAGERS at once gorging on the ripening berries. The tree was also popular with SWAINSON'S THRUSHES and one or two GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSHES. There was a constant flow of birds to and from the tree that kept us spellbound for most of an hour. Numbers of orioles and grosbeaks were down, with only a single female BALTIMORE ORIOLE and a single male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK found. There was one lingering WHITE-THROATED SPARROW as well. Variety was down from last week's total of 74 species, but there were still plenty of good birds around. Complete list is below. -- Lewis Barnett Math & Comp Sci, University of Richmond, VA 23173 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Location: James River Park - Main Section Observation date: 5/17/08 Number of species: 58 Canada Goose 3 Mallard 5 Turkey Vulture 2 Osprey 1 Bald Eagle 1 Red-shouldered Hawk 1 Rock Pigeon 6 Mourning Dove 2 Chimney Swift 2 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker 3 Downy Woodpecker 2 Eastern Phoebe 3 Great Crested Flycatcher 2 Eastern Kingbird 2 White-eyed Vireo 1 Red-eyed Vireo 6 Blue Jay 3 Purple Martin 6 Tree Swallow 1 Northern Rough-winged Swallow 2 Barn Swallow 1 Carolina Chickadee 4 Tufted Titmouse 3 White-breasted Nuthatch 1 Carolina Wren 6 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 3 Gray-cheeked Thrush 1 Swainson's Thrush 6 Wood Thrush 1 American Robin 4 Gray Catbird 3 Northern Mockingbird 1 Northern Parula 1 Chestnut-sided Warbler 2 Magnolia Warbler 2 Black-throated Blue Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler 2 Yellow-throated Warbler 1 Blackpoll Warbler 6 American Redstart 5 Prothonotary Warbler 1 Northern Waterthrush 2 Kentucky Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 3 Canada Warbler 1 Scarlet Tanager 10 Song Sparrow 1 White-throated Sparrow 1 Northern Cardinal 5 Rose-breasted Grosbeak 1 Indigo Bunting 1 Common Grackle 10 Brown-headed Cowbird 4 Baltimore Oriole 1 House Finch 2 American Goldfinch 5 House Sparrow 2 This report was generated automatically by eBird v2(http://ebird.org) You are subscribed to VA-Richmond-General.
