After playing spin the wheel with the weather guru's and checking every APP out
there giving a 60% chance of 40% rain and 30% chance of "we have no idea"...the
MAPS' team changed our skeddy and went out yesterday morning instead of today
for a very successful outing. The nets were opened under a waning gibbous moon
and a cloud of mosquitoes just before sunrise.
Yellow-throated warblers, Indigo Buntings,Orchard Orioles and Yellow-billed
Cuckoos sounded off most of the day but alas eluded our nets. After the typical
morning rush of NOCA's, CARW's and PROW's we started getting the "good stuff".
Happy to net another Summer Tanager this week-this time an after second year
(ASY) male. An absolute stunner. A Great-crested Flycatcher came into the nets
again this week. Quite a raucous little girl-definitely in breeding mode. While
extracting a Prothonotary from our nets a Ruby-throated Hummingbird hit the
net. She was easily taken out of the net and sent on her way as we do not band
hummers.
A couple hefty Common Grackles joined the data base this week as well as a
Downy Woodpecker. Another good showing of Prothonotary warblers, some recaps
and others new. We did hear a Barred Owl "cooking for us" just before we furled
the nets.
Not sure if we had a larger variety of snacks of bird species this week. There
was some good snacking out there!
Thank you to the MAPS' folks who turned out with little sleep under their
wings...as usual, it was worth it!
