If you don't approve of hunting, that is you prerogative; but the bird list
is NO place to slam a person who does. She is not breaking the law. If you
have ever seen an animal starve to death because of overpopulation of an
area due to lack of "natural" predators, maybe you would not be so
judgmental.

Perhaps you can catch up with the deer that was wounded by one of the
teenage hunters there on Saturday, finish off the job, and take the
animal out of its misery. From reading your occasional posts on this
birding list, I can only assume that you are very proficient at killing
animals.

Had a great evening birding Ball Neck on Saturday at the NNK. The time was
about 4:00 pm and there were clear skies. On the way to Dameron marsh I saw
a flock of Eastern Meadowlarks about 25 to 30 flying from field to field.
They would sit in the winter rye, which is about 2" inches in some fields, 4
inches in other fields and pop there heads up. It was a great find.

Jim and I walked at Dutch Gap this morning, and a beautiful morning it
was! Birding was slow; we didn't see an eagle for the first time in about
two weeks. Good news is that the park maintenance has begun work on
boardwalk and walking trails. They said access will be closed for "a few
days" until work is complete. Keeping our fingers crossed.
We did see a great many ducks: lots of mallards and gadwalls, a few
wigeons and northern shovelers, and two ring necks. We got a great look at
a red shouldered hawk perched low and close to the road in his/her hunting
mode. Totally unconcerned about observers, he dilligently scanned for prey
for at least an hour. We also saw a Cooper's hawk, some flickers, bluebirds
and redwings, and, at the boat landing, about 200 black vultures. Guess the
plan to get rid of them was unsuccessful.

Night Sky Tour at Mason Neck Park

Join the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust for a night sky and meteor
shower viewing! Participants will watch the annual Geminid meteor shower,
and be led on a night sky tour by Astronomer Bob Hand (or Bob Traube).
Participants should bring lawn chairs and blankets/sleeping bags; anyone
wishing to view more than the meteor shower should bring binoculars. If you
can committ to a 2-hour watch bring a watch that can be viewed in the dark
and a pencil to record your observations for submission to the Association
of Lunar and Planetary Observers. Hot refreshments will be provided,
complements of Starbucks! The event is free although there is a $2 park
entrance fee per vehicle and a $10 donation is appreciated. Participants
need to arrive at the parking gate at 10:30pm; we will wait for 20 minutes

Northern Harrier that flew right in front of me at eye level while I was up

the tree 20 minutes before I accomplished what I went to Occoquan to do.

Subject: [va-bird] Bird ID from Huntley Meadows
Chances are that I'm going to feel foolish when I learn the answer...but,
what bird is this? It was seen this morning at Huntley Meadows in a tree
near the water just before the observation tower. There were a great
number of Grackles around, but this bird appeared to be slightly smaller
and it looked as though some of the Grackles chased it when they noticed
it.

Subject: [va-bird] Harris's Sparrow at Julie Metz Wetlands
VA Birders,
Rob Hilton asked me to post a report that he saw a Harris's Sparrow at
Julie Metz Wetlands, Prince William Co., at about 11:45 am this morning.
The
bird was on or near the boardwalk path to the blind, which is just north of
the
spot where it was reported previously. Our No. Va. Bird Club trip to nearby
Leesylvania State Park went to Julie Metz earlier that morning, but we did
not
find the Harris's Sparrow. Then several of us went back at the end of the
trip to look for the sparrow again. We met Rob, who told us about seeing
the
bird and showed us where he saw it, but alas, it did not appear for us.
However, we did add 4 nice birds to our trip list on our second visit:
Northern Harrier, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Rusty Blackbird, and Purple Finch (1
of
each). Earlier, the group had seen Am. Tree, Field, Fox, Song, Swamp, and
White-throated Sparrows, and Dark-eyed Junco at Julie Metz Wetlands.

Bob,
I read your message on the VA-Bird archives before I checked my email and
I assumed from it that you were referring to the Rusty Blackbird. This
was confimed when I opened up three other messages all telling me that it
was a Rusty Blackbird. I got carried away by the illustration of
"occasional female has pale eye" for the Brewer's Blackbird in Sibley,
but I guess that was not too far off.
It could have been singing the Marseilles for all I knew as I was
surrounded by every Grackle in North America outside of those in
captivity. It was like a seen from "Birds."
