While looking out my window this morning, I saw a woodcock very close in the
short dead grass. I saw behavior I've never seen before. As he stalked his
prey (invertebrates in the soil) he did not move forward motionless like a
heron stalks, but instead moved his body in a swaying motion, back and forth,
keeping his head totally still and his legs slowly moving ahead. Not sure of
the purpose of the swaying. Maybe it just helps him keep his balance. It was
very interesting to watch.
