A reason to celebrate, indeed. Thanks so much, Deapesh.

Hello,

A few spring updates from our house-birding in Centreville VA (Fairfax
county) for the last few weeks.

Every year, we have one very solid opportunity to hear the song of a BROWN
THRASHER (BRTH). This spring was no exception, one individual showed up on
April 6 2022 and sang its heart out from its topmost perch of trees. A pair
of BRTHs were seen on April 14, 2022 - one of them fluffed up its feathers
and courted the other one.

Maybe some of you will agree with this: every year I worry that I will not
be able to recognize the song of the BRTH. But once it arrives here and
starts singing, immediately it is evident that a new songster has arrived.

Our resident HOUSE WREN (HOWR) arrived on April 13 2022.
This year, perhaps due to the warmer weather in feb/march, the carolina
chickadee pair which nests in the nest box (which the HOWR later takes
over) did not start their nesting process early enough to have a successful
brood. On April 16 2022, the HOWR dismantled all that the chickadee had
built and took over the nest box.

Our FOS RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was seen on April 12 2022. We did not
see any for the past few days, so they must have moved on from our backyard.

A resplendent male INDIGO BUNTING made its appearance once on April 27
2022 and then again on May 7 2022.

We heard the familiar "tweep" call of the GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER on May
3 2022.

Our early-resident HOUSE FINCH has finished a successful brood. Around 5
little ones follow the mom and dad pair in our backyard.

WHITE THROATED SPARROWs are still seen at the feeders.

And then yesterday, we had another FOS which prompted me to write the
following few lines:

========

Sunday afternoon, cloudy May day
just another weekend.

Daily rains create soggy outdoor spirits
we can't go out, so we hover besides this window.

And then a glance at the feeders,
a flash of color brings a downpour of excitement,
calls, shouts and screams crescendo,
calling the kids to rush to this window
"come quick....slow down....see there, near the feeders,
those BIRDS - two Rose Breasted Grosbeaks!"

In just casually passing by,
they have transformed this afternoon
into a cherished memory!
a story to share, this poem to write,
and yes, a reason to celebrate life.

Sunday afternoon, cloudy May day
How wonderful is our weekend!

========

yes - two bright ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKs made our day yesterday!

cheers,
Deapesh.
