We always pack our tripod in the checked luggage and carry on the scope.
The past trip (last week) to Florida the scope was inspected and taken out
of it's case but wasn't a problem. I would never pack a scope in checked
luggage as the tripod in the checked luggage always kicks the bag out for
inspection. Think they don't like seeing those long metal tubes in the
suitcase. Things can happen to items in a checked suitcase and I feel safer
with it being carried on.

I hope this isn't off-topic. If so, please reply off-list. I am going
to fly to California and plan to bring my small spotting scope and
tripod. I think they will fit in my bag, which can be carried on or
checked. I would prefer to carry it on with me.
Does anyone have any recent experience with airport security? Have you
brought a scope and tripod in a carry-on bag? Thanks!!
