I would not be surprised if the bluebirds seen were ones that had been able
previously to nest where there is now a new Whole Foods (bluebirds may be
seen in Virginia throughout the winter).
When a new Giant opened in Charlottesville, I saw bluebirds hanging around
near the new shopping center where there were very few trees left.
Ironically, I was there to take pictures to use in my talks about our
ever-increasing
loss of habitat due to development. The bluebirds certainly made the point.
This phenomenon is undoubtedly happening more and more as land is developed.
It is very depressing and sad. If anyone else has witnessed this kind of
thing--even for other animals, such as rabbits that seem to be disappearing--I
would appreciate it if you would contact me at my e-mail address.
Thanks so much.
