Osprey
Today, while conducting the February winter bald ealge count on the
Rappahannock River, Bill Portlock spotted an osprey, a first this year for
both of us, just upriver from Port Royal. We thought it a bit surprising
that an early osprey would occur so far upriver, but this was also a heavy
concentration area for eagles so the fishing and the low tide may
have been the reason.
Rappahannock Winter Bald Eagle Survey Results
The total for February eagles was 247 (128 immature, 117 adult, 7 unknown).
Many nests were observed, at least two had eagles in incubation posture.
Of this total, about 60 were in Cat Point Creek.
The total for January was 276 (127 adults, 137 immature, unknown 12). Of
this total 71 were in Cat Point Creek.
The survey route is from Tappahannock upriver to Mount Creek, about 35
miles.
