Hi, everyone-
I heard two very odd bird sounds the other day, late in the afternoon. One
was a moderately high-pitched, very loud, moderately-fast "COO, COO, COO" or
something like that. It was one note called three times and each COO was very
evenly spaced and had the same pitch. Definitely not like a Mourning Dove. I
never saw the bird that was making the sound, but my thought was either an owl
of some sort, or a cuckoo species. After the three COO's, it would pause for
about a second, then call three more "COO's" exactly like the first set. It may
have done a third set, but I don't remember. Any thoughts?
The other sound was more like a goldfinch with a stutter: "twee,
TOO-too-too-too-too" repeated several times as it was flying. The "too's" were
soft, though the first one was clearly louder than all the others after it, and
they (the "too's") seemed to be going down the scale. There was (I believe) a
slight pause between the "twee" and the "too's." The bird had an undulated
flight, kind of like a woodpecker's (and like a Goldfinch's, too, I believe),
and it was about Goldfinch-sized. I suppose it may well have been a Goldfinch,
though I saw no yellow as it flew over head. Perhaps an immature learning to
call correctly?
