Dear Teen Birders
The monthly field trip for the Northern Virginia
Teen Bird CLub sponsored by Audubon Society of
Northern Virgina and FLint Hill School will be
this coming Saturday, January 20 from 9 AM to 9
PM.
Planned destination is Delaware Bay where my
Field Natural History and Ornithology class saw
more snow geese than I have ever seen in my life
this past Saturday. Someone else estimated
300,000 birds the day before, and I would not be
surprised if that is correct. The entire marsh at
Prime Hook near Broadkill Beach was jam-packed
with snow geese. This must be one of the nature
spectacles of the world. Even my non-birding
students were flabbergasted and amazed. Exact
destinations next Saturday will depend on what is
reported from that region this week, but we may
look for snow buntings, brown-headed nuthatches,
and scoters at Cape Henlopen and we hope that the
Northern Shrike and Ross's Geese are still at
Prime Hook.
Please let me know if you plan to attend. Space
is limited and this will probably be a popular
trip.
You will need to be wearing layers of clothes,
and prepared for wind, rain, and cold. Also bring
water and food. There will also be opportunity to
buy "fast food to-go" en route.
We will have spare binoculars and at least two
spotting scopes.
We will meet at the Upper School campus of FLint
Hill School on 3320 Jermantown Rd in Oakton
(Fairfax County).
This trip is open to students in grades 8-12.
