VA Birders,
I spent a little time birding on the Northern Neck today mostly in
Westmoreland County but a little in King George with brief forays into
Richmond, Essex, and Caroline (crossing river bridges to see what terns
I could find). The best birds were several Royal Terns including a
juvenile sitting on the pilings near the marina in Colonial Beach and
several different flocks of Bank Swallows. The only other terns I found
in Richmond/Essex County were Forster's with many juveniles sitting on
the pilings in Tappahannock (and a couple flying on the Richmond County
side of the river there).
The first Bank Swallows I encountered were sitting on a wire with some
Barn Swallows just north of Rt. 3 on Stratford Road. Then I found a
couple more south of Rt. 3 on Rt. 637. On Rt. 634 just north of the
intersection with Rt. 237, I found the mother lode, a flock of 30-40
Bank Swallows feeding over a soybean field. As far as I could tell
there were only Bank Swallows in this flock. With that success I tried
to find some in King George County but I was unable to.
