Nineteen birders gathered for this morning's Huntley Meadows Monday Morning
Birdwalk and tallied 42 species. Our highlights included a slight growth in
the Red-headed Woodpecker population to 5 individuals working in the trees near
the east end of the boardwalk; an enormous flock of assorted blackbird species
in the woods around the central wetlands; and a single Lesser Scaup among the
Mallards in the central wetland. The wetland restoration project has created
increased water areas which we think will attract more waterfowl in the winter.
We have already seen this phenomenon with larger numbers of Green-winged Teal
on today's walk.
