Howdy!
This morning, while conducting a point count
survey in a restricted-entry area of Quantico
Marine Base, I was surprised by a first year
female mourning warbler (exactly as pictured in
Sibley). There is no way to tell, but I am
wondering if it was young from a nearby nest or
if it wandered down here from the north or from
the mountains. This same site was surveyed 4
previous times this spring/summer with no sight
or sound of a mourning warbler anywhere nearby.
I guess there is already some post-breeding
movement going on. I wonder where else mournings
will turn up.
While returning I saw an adult male sharp-shinned
hawk at the entrance to Burke Lake Park (Fairfax
Co) at about 1PM. I don't see them in this area
very often in the summer.
All the best
Fred
