An extremely pale red-tailed hawk was observed by Tom Bidrowski, Waterfowl
Project Leader at DGIF on Sunday.
The bird was located in Cohoke Marsh on the Pamunkey River. The following
mapquest link shows the area. I am unsure if the roads indicated on the map
are public or private.
The bird was noted during an aerial survey of the marsh and Tom managed to snap
a few photos. Given the fact that Tom was doing a flyby at 200ft with a point
and shoot, the photos are better then anything I could've come up with. Image
is sufficient to see the tail color (rustier then the picture shows), dark
terminal band and a bit of mottling on the back. Overall a very pale bird.
