DC Area Birders,
As usual this time of year, there is a large scaup raft forming on the
Potomac River between Indian Head, Prince Georges Co., and Mason Neck,
Fairfax Co. Charlie Creighton and I spotted it as we were scouting out
locations for next Saturday's DC/Potomac Waterfowl count. We estimated the
raft closest to us (at Mason Neck) was about 5000 strong and the vast
majority of birds were Lesser Scaup. Nearby at the mouth of the Great Marsh
of Mason Neck were a nice assortment of divers and dabblers (several hundred)
including 75 Tundra Swan. (Also, a couple of thousand Ruddies and scaup were
on Belmont Bay.)
Additional volunteers are desired, esp. for the Prince Georges and Montgomery
Co. area. More information on the DC/Potomac Waterfowl count for this coming
Saturday, Dec 7, 2002 can be found at the Fairfax Audubon Society
