On Sunday, Jan. 25, I had two interesting birding experiences. The
first was the siting of a lone Pine Siskin at my feeder. I've been on
the lookout for them, but haven'it seen any for awhile. Several years
back, they were found in great numbers at Charlottesville area feeders.
This bird stayed for about an hour. The timing was a few hours prior to
the start of the snowstorm which has added about 10 inches to the snow
we already had. The winds came from the southeast that morning, which
is unusual for here. The other siting was in McDowell. We were driving
east on 250 and passing the McDowell dump. A flock of 30+ turkeys flew
overhead (and not far overhead). I had never had the experience of
turkeys flying right over my head in great numbers. It reminded me of
the Wizard of Oz, when those ungainly monkeys flew over Dorothy!)
Perhaps someone had left some tidbits at the dump, which had attracted
the flock? Times are pretty tough up here for animals right now.
