Subject: Osprey, grebe at T. Roosevelt Island (D.C.)

While strolling around Teddy Roosevelt Island around mid-day=20
yesterday, we saw an osprey fly past at close range with an ample=20
catch of the day in its grasp. This was in the marshy inlet, by the=20
boardwalk. Indicating that migration season is in full swing, we=20
also saw a winter-plumaged grebe in the main channel of the Potomac=20
River, about 40 yards away. Based on the long bill, dark crown, and=20
pale but not white cheeks, I figure it must be red-necked grebe, a=20
life bird for both of us. Any other possibilities? [snip]
