Dear Ned,
My apologies to you and to the rest of VA-birders. Your last sentence in this
post reminded me that Black-billed Cuckoo should be on the VA comprehensive
list for 2004. A BBCU was calling quite energetically from cover on north
Jericho Ditch in the Great Dismal Swamp on Sunday, April 25. It was eventually
seen by two in our group, but continued to tease the rest of us with its
incessant calling from the tangles!

Subject: [va-bird] Re: comp list at 299
Hey Sue (and VA-Birders) -
Just back from Europe and wow! Look at all the arrivals. I think those
88-degree days have resulted in some really early arrival dates this year,
and
I'm dying to get out and see some of these great birds. I would imagine
that
this weekend, reports of Bay-breasted and Tennessee Warblers should come from
the western part of the state (or the middle; they're rare in spring out here
on the coast); that Red Knots have already turned up out around the barrier
islands; that a Black Tern or two will pass through Craney Island soon (need
some bad weather to hold one there!); that Least Bitterns are already
haunting
the reedbeds around both sides of Back Bay in Virginia Beach; and that the
first
Mississippi Kites should be coming in to traditional areas south of Emporia
this weekend. For those with lots of energy, a seawatch from Cape Henry,
especially during easterly winds, should produce a Roseate Tern in the next
week,
if enough hours are spent watching the Common Terns. Another 15 or so
species should be reported in the first two weeks of May, mostly shorebirds,
with a
few more thrushes, a flycatcher, and a cuckoo to come.
