Howdy--
Fishing yesterday at Amelia Lake when my wife and I saw a black tern
foraging. I've only been in Virginia about 14 months, but I've not seen
one of these here before. This is in fact the first black tern I've seen
since leaving North Dakota in September 2001. Almost brought tears to my
eyes.
He was there when we arrived at a bit before 0800, and we lost him
about 0900. Adult breeding plumage (which should be well on the way out
by now in a breeder, from my experience), but I didn't have my binocs so
I could not determine of he had started molt. He seemed to be
concentrating on the southern half of the lake, looked like he was
picking some of the many water striders off the surface of the lake.
