The largely frozen Potomac River off Leesylvania State Park held thousands of
ducks, as well as gulls and eagles early this afternoon. Thousands of lesser
scaup were packed into a relatively small open area just off the picnic area.
Amongst the lessers were a number of greater scaup (close enough to see the
green sheen), and single bufflehead and canvasback. A littler further out in
another open patch were thousands of common mergansers, along with about a
dozen red-breasted. Standing around the ice were a dozen eagles. The ice was
also the resting place for hundreds of gulls, including an adult lesser
black-backed. On the way home I stopped along Neabsco Creek, and picked up
mallard, black duck, green-winged teal, and hooded merganser.
