This is my complete list from the Dutch Gap Conservation Area during 3
hours late Saturday morning April 21, and (just for completeness) a
separate list for a late afternoon visit to James River Park in
Richmond. Probably the only noteworthy species were a HUMMINGBIRD
(sp.), not identified even to the family level; a BALD EAGLE over the
James River; and a complete lack of Juncos. I was surprised not to
notice a single Junco - I had seen them in several Northern Virginia
locations this past week, but not yesterday at 2 locations in the
Richmond area. I noticed that Rachel Echols' report from the same day
also did not include them. Are they gone for the season?
I was blown away by the variety at Dutch Gap, especially considering I
only arrived there at 10 AM. 5 warblers yesterday, among other
goodies. Thanks so much to Rachel Echols, Peter Wilson, Margaret
O'Bryan, Tom Thomas, and Stephen Living, who all volunteered a lot of
helpful suggestions for birding the Richmond area.
Several common species are missing because of my lack of skill, e.g.,
distinguishing between different woodpecker calls, etc.
