Sorry for the belated report about my half-day
trip (before the snow) to George Washington's
Birthplace, Muse Road, and the Leedstown area on
Thursday Feb 3. Despite its lateness, I thought
some people might be interested in the
highlights.
Leedstown
--1 merlin, perhaps the same bird seen 100 meters
away on the Christmas Bird Count in December?
--Mixed flock of blackbirds with 20 rusties, 300
redwings, and 2 cowbird
--increase in roadside juncos: 130
--harrier, red-tail, sharp-shinned 1 each
--Mergansers in Rappahannock River: 6 male
red-breasted, 1 male common, 5 female common
--4 white-crowned sparrows in same place as on
CBC this year and last year
--5 adult and 2 immature Bald Eagle
Birthplace and Muse Road (adjacent property
overlooking Potomac River):
--4260 Canada Geese
--3 Snow (Blue) Geese
--3 Cackling Geese
--52 Redheads (at least 3/4 male)
--600 male, 235 female Canvasbacks
--Scaups in Popes Creek: 82 Lesser 9 Greater;
Scaups at beach: both species, mostly too far to
ID= 450;
Scaups at Muse Road: 70 Greater, 10 Lesser, Scaup
sp far away 200, males outnumbering females 3:1.
--25 male, 3 female Ring-necked Duck
--4 pairs of long-tailed duck
--114 male, 63 female Common Goldeneye: wonderful
displays by males
--69 male and 37 female Buffleheads
--2 female surf scoter
--14 male and 23 female ruddy duck, + 30 unkn.sex
--2 male, 1 female common merganser
--2 black duck, no other dabblers.
--25 tundra swan
--2 common loon
--3 adult, 2 immature bald eagle
--1 belted kingfisher
--3 great blue heron
--1 sharp-shinned hawk
--1 red-tailed hawk
no kestrels in the three spots where they are
normally seen.
