I haven't seen a report on this past weekend's VSO
summer field trip to Mount Rogers/Whitetop in
Southwest Virginia.
I was busy with another event and couldn't attend.
Knowing that many VSO birders would jump
over the couple of miles from the base of Whitetop
Mountain in Grayson Co. to see the Alder Flycatcher
at Whitetop Gap just ate my heart out all weekend.
So, today, Tom Horsch and I went to the gap at
Whitetop Station to search for the Alders and, just
as Glen Eller reported earlier, they were all over
the place.
We easily heard three birds at the beaver ponds
and there were probably several more. Glen
reported five just a couple of weeks past.

This species has escaped me several times in habitat
where it should have been as easy as picking up
pennies at at wishing well. But since it was always
such a easy bird, I just kept putting off going back
to nail it.
We nailed it today and it was really a great bird for
us.
