VA BIRDers,
At dusk yesterday I observed a pair of Yellow-crowned Nigh-Herons fly from
the north near the beginning of the boadwalk and across the boardwalk loop
and pond to the southern end of the main marsh. This is my first observation
of this species in March for No. VA (although not unexpected, given Paul
Pisano's observation of one at Hain's Point flying over the Potomac last week
and my previous early date of April 3).
Observations of other interesting birds at dusk resulted in:
Great Blue Heron 5
Great Egret 1
C. Goose 25
Wood Duck 1 (female)
Mallard 11
Green-winged Teal 33
Hooded Merganser 5 (all female)
Common Snipe 6-8
Barred Owl 2
Swamp Sparrow 5 (several singing)
