The Short-eared Owls did not disappoint at Montresor Rd. this evening, altho
with the wind chill they were pushing our limit - At least 4 birds, and
probably 5 showed up. Two stayed in the vicinity of the now infamous "box" out
in
the field across from the Montresor gate. One came back to a fence post in the
tree line so we were able to get OK views of the facial disk. As it got darker,
they seemed to get more vocal.
Before dark, there were 4 Rough-legged Hawks and 2 Harriers working the field.
On my way to Leesburg, I visited Beaverdam Res. where there were 50 Common
Mergs and 25 Tundra Swans along with the 500+ RB Gulls (a few Herring mixed
in)-
at Dulles wetlands, the ducks included Pintail (6) Bufflehead (2) Common
Merg (15) One F. Hooded Merg. Gadwall (12) asstd Mallards and Blacks and
another
5 Tundra Swans. At North Fork wetlands, there was 1 RT Hawk, 1 Harrier,
1Meadowlark, 1 Bufflehead and 1 Rich Rieger
