I observed a Yellow-billed Loon at Snickers Gap Hawkwatch today,sept. 30,
2002 at about 12:50 pm, edst. The bird first appeared low over the western
ridge near the weather tower, flew up slowly to above the posion ivy tree and
slowly circled 3 times and then flew off down the west side of Blue Ridge
Mountain. Total viewing time about 2 minutes.
The bird had a dark head and neck with a very yellow bill, top side of the
wings and body were dark, the underside of the body and wings were light, the
collar in a 60 power scope was not visible.
While the bird circled 3 times it did not try to gain height-it looked lost.
