All,
Today, as I was walking in to work, I noticed a bird lying on its
side next to one of the windows along our handicap ramp. At first I thought
it was a dead bird, but upon closer inspection, I discovered that the bird
was still alive! I made a mad dash up to my office and phoned the Wildlife
Rescue League, who did a fantastic job this time around. They called me
back in about half an hour, and told me to catch the bird, and put it in a
box until a rehabilitater could get there. Thankfully, one of my co-workers
helped me find a box and some latex gloves, and out we went to catch the
bird. Despite the fact that the bird couldn't fly, it was still quite a
chore to catch it because boy could it scurry along the ground! It tried to
fly away a couple of times, but the left wing just wouldn't work for him.
I kept the bird with me in my office until the rehabiliter, Ms.
Sarah Fry, came around lunchtime to pick him up, and that's when I finally
got an ID on the bird, it was an injured Worm Eating Warbler! This is the
first time I've spotted one of those, and I certainly wasn't expecting to
find one around office buildings in Reston, but I suppose my office is close
enough to the W&OD Trail, that perhaps he came from the woods over there.
In any case, the rehabilitater says the bird will be just fine, and
she's going to let him rest up for a couple of days and then send him back
out into the wild. Helping save a warbler certainly wasn't something I was
expecting to do coming in to work this morning, but I'm glad I was able to
do it.
