While most Virginians were enjoying the excellent birding within our
Commonwealth and recording some excellent findings, several of us were in
New Jersey to prepare for and compete in the 19th annual World Series of
Birding on Saturday, May 11th. We worked hard, had fun, managed to remain
awake and alert for most of the midnight to midnight period and finished
with 195 species, 21 more than last year, but still 29 shy of the winners,
the Cornell Lab of Ornithology Sapsuckers.
We wish to thank all of you who have contributed or pledged dollars to
Virginia's important Bird Area program, the beneficiary of our fundraising
efforts. Approximately $10,000 was raised for this worthy, fledgling
program. All who have contributed will receive a written summary of our
adventure along with a complete list of species identified.
