Hi all,

I spent the last couple days around Lake Anna and got over to Pleasant
Landing yesterday. 6 Common Loons and 1 Horned Grebe, no Pacific or
Red-throated Loons as far as I could tell. On leaving Pleasant Landing I
turned right onto 701 and stopped to look over some Robins, and a
reddish bird flew in and landed on the shoulder. It looked a heck of a
lot like a thrush, with black dots on the underside like a Hermit Thrush
but more extensive. It had a reddish brown back and tail and I saw white
high on its face and a separate white low on its face. The upper white
could well have been an eye ring. In the two seconds I had to look at
it, it was scratching up leaves backwards. But I recollect long, thin,
black legs which does not jibe with Sibley, and I would not describe the
tail as short which also does not jibe with Sibley.

Does anyone know if it is impossibly early in the year for this to be a
Wood Thrush, or have any help? This would be a life bird for me and I
love finding new birds on my own, but I can't stop vacillating on
whether to count it or not.

I also found 8 Brewer's Blackbirds this afternoon, 6 male and 2 female.
They were along one of the ever expanding Lake Anna developments off
622.

Last, I got to Julie Metz around 5:00 pm and finally found the Harris's
Sparrow a half hour later. I got great looks at it for over a minute and
it perfectly fit Joanna Taylor's description from this morning. In fact
it was probably eating her millet and sunflower chips! Thanks, Joanna,
and all who kept this beautiful sparrow thread alive.

Cheers,

John Fox
