I spent the last couple of days at my place in Shenandoah County, and if this
period was any indicator, we may be in for a good winter finch year. High
counts were: Purple Finch-44, Pine Siskin-19, Am.Goldfinch-32. Though not
"winter finches", two other species also turned up in good numbers: D-E
Junco-34,
Am. Robin-ca. 75. We had our first Fox Sparrows (4), a late Chipping Sparrow,
and about 45 starlings with the robins. Though I know the latter is less than
exciting to most, starlings are very rare in our little mountain valley,
showing up only briefly in late fall and not every year. (House Sparrows are
even
rarer!). Otherwise species and numbers were fairly normal for this time of
year.
