Had an interesting find at my school today, a dead Wilsons Snipe. This
morning, a teacher came in to the office to let me know there was a strange
bird, with a long bill near the music trailer. Since my school is located in
the Franconia area of Alexandria, I was not expecting anything too special. To
my surprise, it was a snipe. The bird was located on a metal ramp along side
the trailer. Its neck was broken so I am assuming it flew into the side of the
trailer. I got a pair of gloves and examined the bird. I took the snipe up to
the 4th grade class that had discovered it so they could get a better look at
bird. We discussed what kind of bird they thought it might be and how it might
have ended up at our school. It was sad to find the dead bird but what a great
excuse to get out of the office for a bit. It gave me chance to share with
teachers and students my love for birds. Maybe, I lit a little spark in
someone.
