Birders,
This morning, I observed a first winter, female White-winged Scoter at
Lake Orange. Nice bird to find near home after missing it over the
weekend at CBBT and Outer Banks. The bird was on the water and showed
well until the cloud cover lifted and it moved into the bright sun.
Second time I've seen the species in the Piedmont, the first time being
at Lake Anna 1/11/99.
Also, at Lake Orange were 24 Hooded Mergansers, 1 Greater Scaup (f), 2
Pied-billed Grebes, 2 Black-backed Gulls, 4 Herring Gulls, 200
Ring-billed Gulls. The usual feral mallards are hanging around.
