Despite the continuing heavy fog on the Blue Ridge Parkway, we had a good
number of birds migrating through today. At the feeders were 11 Pine Siskins
and a couple dozen Goldfinches. 9 Wood Ducks were on the pond.
Although there were several non-Yellow-rumpeds among the large warbler flocks,
the only ones I got a really good look at were a couple of brown Palm Warblers,
a Black-and-White Warbler and a beautiful male Black-throated Blue Warbler. A
few Golden-crowned Kinglets, and probably 20 or more Ruby-crowned Kinglets were
tagging along with the Yellow-rumped Warblers, as well as a Hermit Thrush an a
Blue-headed Vireo.
In the brushy margins to our stream I found dozens of sparrows: Towhee,
Chipping, Field, Song, Swamp, White-throated, White-crowned and Junco. There
was also a Savannah Sparrow along the driveway.
